2021 Distinguished Researcher Award: Dr. Sompop Bencharit

The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) honored Dr. Sompop Bencharit with the 2021 Distinguished Researcher Award at the Annual Awards Ceremony during the 51st Annual Session of the ACP, held virtually Oct. 26-30, 2021. This award honors individuals whose research represents a significant contribution to the literature, teaching, or clinical applications of the specialty of prosthodontics, dentistry, science, and health professions.

“I would like to first thank the American College of Prosthodontists. This Distinguished Researcher Award is the highlight of my research career.” Dr. Bencharit said, “I deeply appreciate it and feel humble to be among the company of great researchers, teachers, innovators, and big names such as Dennis Tarnow, Tom Taylor, Ken Anusavice, Charles Goodacre, and PI Branemark. These previous recipients of the award have made significant contributions to the arts and sciences of prosthodontics. I truly feel truly honored.”

Dr. Sompop Bencharit is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the ACP,. He currently serves as an Assistant Editor for Journal of Prosthodontics. He has published over 100 abstracts and authored over 90 articles and monographs on dental implants, structural biology, salivary proteomics, 3D printing, and digital dentistry.

He is Associate Professor, Founding Director of Digital Dentistry Technologies, and Director of Clinical Research at the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research, School of Dentistry and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering, at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his DDS and diploma in prosthodontics from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, a Certificate and Masters Degree in prosthodontics, PhD in Oral Biology, and a Certificate of Clinical Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
