3D Virtual Patient Representation for Guiding Maxillary Overdenture Fabrication

JOP_5-12

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, authors Marcelo Pérez-Giugovaz, So Hyeon Park, & Marta Revilla-León describe a technique to obtain a 3D virtual representation of a maxillary edentulous patient guided by an additively manufactured intraoral scan body.

3D virtual representations of edentulous patients can be challenging as different information and data needs to be aligned. In the workflow described, the intraoral scan body incorporated a custom tray and occlusion rim which facilitated the digital definitive cast, maxillary occlusion rim position, interocclusal registration, and guided the integration of the facial scans. The technique simplified the design and manufacturing of the maxillary overdenture.

An added benefit is that the virtual design of the intraoral scan body can be modified for the patient’s specific arch dimensions using a CAD software program which can facilitate the clinical procedure.

The technique could also be used on completely edentulous patients for the fabrication of conventional complete dentures, diagnostic waxing, or computer-aided surgical implant planning procedures.
