A Complete Digital Approach for Facially Generated Full Arch Diagnostic Wax Up

JOP_11-2-22

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a report of a digital technique that incorporates a facial approach, including 3D face scans, with cone beam computed tomography and intraoral scans for implant planning, guided surgery, and 3D printing of an interim complete-arch fixed implant-supported prosthesis.

Designing a proper facially generated diagnostic wax up is considered a crucial step in dictating the functional and esthetic requirements of a prosthesis. The standard digital approach integrates the data from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanners, and facial 2D images to enable design of wax ups for virtual implant planning. 3D face scanning technology has evolved and can assist a comprehensive wax-up design.

This report describes the use of this integrated technique for treatment of a patience with maxillary terminal dentition. After a complete exam and treatment plan discussion, a maxillary implant-supported fixed complete denture was accepted as the final treatment.

The technique highlights the benefits of face scans as a supplement to existing scanning technologies (CBCT and intraoral scanning) to allow dental professionals to virtually design a full arch diagnostic wax up that is in harmony with the patient's 3D facial anatomy.
