A Custom Intraoral Scan Body to Improve the Accuracy of Intraoral Digital Scans
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a report on a technique to assist with intraoral digital scans for fabricating tooth-supported prostheses using a custom intraoral scan body when the extension of the scan or the clinical characteristics might compromise the reliability of the intraoral digital scan.
A patient receiving tooth-supported crowns from the maxillary left lateral incisor to the maxillary right canine was selected to demonstrate the technique.
In this digital workflow, an impression of the tooth preparations is obtained using the custom intraoral scan body and is digitized using an intraoral scanner. A design software program is used to align the digitized custom intraoral scan body with the preliminary intraoral scan to obtain the definitive virtual cast.
The custom intraoral scan body has two main functions. It acts as a custom impression tray to provide a more detailed reproduction and it provides reference marks that allow the alignment of digital scans to correct possible deviations.
This technique aims to reduce manual conventional laboratory procedures and to correct some of the current limitations of the intraoral scanners, including reducing the possible acquisition distortions of subgingival tooth preparation finish line and improving the detail of the reproduction.
