A Digital Technique to Replicate Edentulous Arches
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Drs. Hang-Nga Mai and Du-Hyeong Lee describe a digital workflow to replicate complete edentulous arches with full functional contour, and position them in the centric relation using an intraoral scanner, the existing denture, and a three-dimensional image reversal technique.
The authors explain that digitization of a patient’s existing denture is especially beneficial in the fabrication of a new denture using CAD/CAM technology. Although previous studies have reported on similar digital techniques for digital denture fabrication, the accurate digital replication of an edentulous arch in its functional form with a correct jaw relation remains challenging.
This new technique provides dental technicians with practical guidance for aligning virtual prosthetic teeth with individualized constraints using an existing denture.
