A Message from Region 1 Membership Director Dr. Louis F. DeSantis
Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting messages from the ACP Regional Membership Directors. First up is Region 1 Membership Director Dr. Louis F. DeSantis:
“A question universally asked every December in the private office of every dentist is 'Why am I paying all of these yearly dues to all of these different organizations?'
"A fair question and one that I have also asked myself, with two exceptions: my membership dues to the American College of Prosthodontists and to the American Board of Prosthodontics.
"To me as a prosthodontist they are the two most important professional organizations that I have an affiliation with. As prosthodontists, we have worked diligently to take our knowledge and skill set to the next level; some of us as private practitioners, some in academia, some serving our nation within the military. The ACP provides prosthodontists a close professional relationship that goes beyond just continuing education—a camaraderie with those who share the same specialty. I have used the term “union” as a one-word definition for the ACP. The American College of Prosthodontists is the sponsoring prosthodontic organization for the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards and gives credibility and definition to the specialty. It is our professional association; our membership in the College helps define us.
"Why do I choose to serve this organization as the Membership Director of Region 1? It is because I believe strongly in this specialty, and in this College. Like many prosthodontists I have learned that if you want to see something succeed you need to actively participate. I invite our younger members along with those who have never served to not wait any longer and to become active participants. You can make a difference by becoming involved in committees, serving at the state level, or serving at the national level. If 2020 taught us anything it’s this: ‘What are you waiting for?’”
