Advocacy Update: Standards Committee on Dental Informatics

The ACP is a voting member of the American Dental Association’s Standards Committee on Dental Informatics. Dr. Stephen F. Bergen represents the ACP at meetings of the committee, which are held twice annually. All dental specialty organizations as well as a number of equipment manufacturers, industry reps, insurance companies, military representatives, software developers, and general observers are invited to attend.

A broad range of subjects were discussed at the most recent meeting, based upon work done outside of the bi-annual sessions but consolidated and voted upon as a committee. These subjects include Information Exchange, Clinical Informatics, Knowledge Management, and Forensic Odontology. Although those are broad topics, each of them have several sub-topics and workgroups.

In addition, the Robert H. Ahlstrom New Investigator Award was given to Dr. Ashley Breanne Barrineau for her research entitled “Systematic Evaluation of Commercially-Available Sensors Using Standardized Image Quality Parameters.” Dr. Ahlstrom, a prosthodontist, was the first Chairman of the Standards Committee. He passed away in 2018. He was warmly remembered and acknowledged at the meeting.

For more about the meeting, an abstract of Dr. Barrineau’s work, and an obituary notice for Dr. Ahlstrom, please read Dr. Bergen’s summary report.

As a member of the ACP, you belong to the organization that represents the specialty of prosthodontics and ensures national recognition of the specialty.
