April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight the importance of early detection and encourage oral cancer screenings. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 49,750 Americans will be diagnosed with oral oropharyngeal cancer this year. Of those newly diagnosed, only 57 percent will be alive in 5 years.
The ACP has published several position statements regarding oral cancer and oral cancer care, including:
Members may distribute position statements to patients and referring dentists, reference them during media interviews to clarify complex issues, cite them as the College's official stance, and link to them in press releases for their practices.
The ACP also offers a patient education brochure on oral cancer, which describes the importance of oral cancer screenings, startling facts about the severity of oral cancer, who is at risk, and warning signs patients need to know.
ACP members can purchase brochures to display in their offices to help patients understand how a prosthodontist can help.
Oral Cancer Screenings
If you're interested in hosting an oral cancer screening event, the ACP has an Oral Cancer Screening Guide, with steps to a successful oral health screening event, as well as a video that can serve as a refresher on how to conduct a screening.
