Bead-Anchored Surgical Templates for Static Computer-Assisted Implant Surgery: A Dental Technique

JOP_8-17-2022

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a technique report co-authored by ACP members, Ahmet Orgev DDS, MSc, MSD, Dean Morton BDS, MS, and Wei-Shao Lin DDS, PhD, MBA.

Different anchoring mechanisms can be used to stabilize surgical templates during full-arch static computer-assisted implant surgery (FA s-CAIS). This report describes the novel design of surgical templates using remaining dentition and opposing occlusal surfaces as the initial positioning mechanism followed by the combination of bone block fixation screw and stainless-steel beads as secondary anchoring mechanisms.

The usage of FA s-CAIS is rising because of clinical demands and commercialization. There are many commercialized systems on the dental market, but comparison between different surgical template designs has not been discussed in detail in the current literature.

One advantage of this bead-anchored surgical template design is that the surgeon can conveniently remove and re-engage surgical templates for intraoperative evaluations. The sphere-shaped bead allows rigid support of the surgical template with a flexible path of insertion for re-engagement.

Future studies are needed to compare the clinical accuracy of this technique with other surgical template designs in the FA s-CAIS. A limitation of this proposed design is the learning curve for the clinician and dental technician to explore design modules in the implant planning software program, however, the virtual design can be saved in the implant planning software program's library for future usage in practice. The virtual design can also be customized when the beads and bone block fixation screws of different dimensions are needed.
