Bias Control in Prosthodontic Research
In a study now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Dr. Herman Dumbrigue and colleagues present the results of a study assessing if bias control in prosthodontic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has improved in the past 10 years.
The RCT is the most reliable research design for evaluating treatment interventions, and RCT quality depends in part on reducing bias in the different phases of its design. Bias can occur in the selection of the study population, observation of the sample, measurement of the outcome, and analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results. The authors of the current study analyzed reporting of bias control in prosthodontic RCTs published in 2008 to 2017 vs. those published from 1988 to 1997.
They found that reporting of bias control did improve across all three prosthodontic journals studied. Following best practices in conducting and publishing RCTs is important in affirming the field of prosthodontics as a leader in evidence-based dentistry.
