Bite Force and Occlusal Patterns in the Mixed Dentition of Children with Down Syndrome
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Drs. Mansour K. Assery, Hanaa S. Albusaily, Sharat C. Pani, and Mohammed S. Aldossary evaluated the parameters of occlusal force and pattern of children with Down syndrome (DS) during mixed dentition when compared to age and gender‐matched controls.
Mixed dentition is a period that determines the development of a stable occlusion but little is known about occlusal characteristics of DS patients. Thirty DS and 30 healthy children, aged 7 to 12 years, were recruited for the study.
The results of this study showed a high prevalence of orofacial dysfunction among the DS population. The occlusal analysis showed that children with DS had longer occlusion time and a lack of ideal occlusion pattern compared to age matched controls.
This population has a high risk of malocclusion related to both genetic predisposition and the interplay between muscle function and skeletal development during growth.
