Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Laboratory-Formulated Polishing Pastes for Two CAD/CAM Ceramic Restorative Materials
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a new study, co-authored by ACP member, Ahmad M. Al-Thobity, on the effect of different polishing pastes with different particle sizes on the surface finish of two different CAD/CAM ceramics.
A total of 128 specimens were prepared of two CAD/CAM ceramics: lithium disilicate and monolithic zirconia. They were divided randomly into 8 groups according to surface treatment: Group 1 (control); Group 2 (glazed); Group 3 (positive control), specimens were polished using standardized surface treatment; groups 4 to 8, specimens were further polished using a diamond paste (DP), and polishing pastes of microzirconia (MZ), nanosilica (NS), nanodiamond (ND), and nanozirconia (NZ), respectively.
Surface roughness was measured using noncontact profilometer and the surfaces were studied using a scanning electron microscope.
Using different methods to polish ceramic materials is an advantage to improve esthetic appearance and the results of this study showed significant differences between the polishing techniques used for each ceramic material and between the ceramic materials for each polishing technique.
Polishing of lithium disilicate and zirconia with the lab-made nano-diamond, nano-zirconia and nano-silica pastes created smooth surfaces that were comparable to glazing technique, while polishing with micro-zirconia paste produced a significant increase in surface roughness of lithium disilicate compared to control and glazed groups.
