Complications Associated with Metal Resin Fixed Complete Dentures Based on Implant Distribution

JOP_5-18-22

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a retrospective study co-authored by ACP member Mathew T. Kattadiyil, BDS, MDS, MS, FACP, on the prevalence and type of complications associated with metal resin fixed complete dentures (FCDs) based on implant distribution.

The study included data collected for a period of 12 years for patients treated with maxillary and mandibular implant-supported fixed complete dentures at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.

In total, 223 patient's charts were reviewed which included 100 maxillary and 123 mandibular FCDs. Implant distribution and prevalence of complications associated with each implant-supported FCD were documented. Based on the prevalence, the complications were compared between implant distribution groups (2 groups in the maxillary arch in relation to the canine eminence and 2 groups in the mandibular arch in relation to the mental foramen).

Denture tooth delamination (DTD) had the highest prevalence among complications regardless of implant distribution. Significant DTD was seen for patients with opposing FCDs in comparison to patients with removable opposing arch prostheses.

Implant distribution groups did not reveal any significant association with denture tooth delamination. However, most DTD was noted in the anterior region both for maxillary and mandibular FCDs. Clinicians should be aware of the potential complications related to opposing fixed prosthesis when planning FCDs as they revealed a higher number of DTDs.
