The ACP Prosthodontic Webinars are designed to give an update on comprehensive prosthodontics, including an overview of the latest developments in dental materials, digital workflows, current trends, and more. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or getting ready to start your career, the ACP Prosthodontic Webinars will provide a fresh take on the fundamentals and an informed perspective on the innovations that are driving the specialty forward.

Immediate Full-Arch Implant Supported Prostheses: From Surgical Options to Definitive Prosthesis

A comprehensive diagnosis and analysis of patients who qualify for full-arch implant prosthesis is a key aspect for a prosthetically driven implant planning and for effective communication with the surgical team. The restorative dentist must have a complete overview of the restorative options for edentulous patients, understanding advantages and disadvantages of each solution. Restorative protocols for delivering an immediate and final prosthesis using conventional techniques and new technologies will be presented step-by-step through clinical cases. This lecture is designed for specialists and general dentists who are interested in learning the latest techniques in full-arch implant prosthesis with immediate function.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand treatment protocol for edentulous arches based on the degree of atrophy.
  • Apply conventional and new protocols for immediate prosthesis.

Biography: Dr. Davide Romeo received his dental degree summa con laude and his PhD from the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy. At the University of Rochester he earned a certificate in prosthodontics and a Masters in Dental Sciences. His background in periodontics and prosthodontics allows him to perform both the surgical and restorative parts of dental treatment. Dr. Romeo has authored several publications and co-authored a book with his mentor, Prof. Agliardi, on Tilted Implants.

The Advent of 3D Printed, Polychromatic, Monolithic Digital Dentures

This presentation explores the evolution of complete dentures from traditional fabrication to contemporary digital methods, including both subtractive (milling) and additive (3D-printing) manufacturing techniques. It will delve into commonly used 3D printing technologies, providing a comparative analysis within the presentation. In particular, the use of material jet technology in fabricating polychromatic monolithic dentures will be outlined as a novel approach. The presentation will articulate the design principles, benefits, clinical challenges, and future development opportunities associated with 3D printed polychromatic monolithic dentures in dentistry, augmented with clinical examples.

  • Describe the evolution of complete denture manufacturing techniques.
  • Examine common 3D printing technologies used for complete denture fabrication.
  • Identify limitations and opportunities for 3D printed polychromatic monolithic dentures.

Biography: Dr. Toshiki Nagai, a dedicated prosthodontist, graduated in 2016 with a DDS from Kyushu University, Japan, later earning a prosthodontics/MSD certificate from Indiana University in 2023. Dr.Nagai is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in prosthodontics. With numerous awards, publications, and memberships, including in prestigious organizations like the American College of Prosthodontists, Dr. Nagai is a leading figure in the field, bridging innovation and clinical practice.

Application of Digital Dentistry in Fixed Prosthodontics

Once the natural dentition is lost, it becomes challenging to restore function, phonetics, and esthetics. Many diagnostic measures are required to develop a biomechanically favorable occlusion. A diagnostic waxing is critical because it permits the determination of the desired implant position and distribution. This waxing also becomes a template for the provisional restoration, which in turn, serves as a blueprint for the establishment of esthetics, phonetics, and function in the definitive restorations. Use of digital dentistry improves the accuracy of surgical placement that will aid the better restorative outcomes.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Develop an appropriate treatment plan and evaluate the vertical dimension of occlusion.
  • Identify the use of digital technique to improve the restorative outcome.
  • Understand use of digital dentistry to design custom abutments and bars/metal substructure for implant supported fixed prostheses.

Biography: Dr. Gurkan Goktug received his DDS from Hacettepe University School of Dental Medicine in 1992 in Turkey. He began his postdoctoral training in prosthodontics in 1998, and received his certificate of advanced graduate study in 2001 from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Immediately after graduation, he was hired as a clinical instructor in the Department of Restorative Sciences and Biomaterials, Division of Postdoctoral Prosthodontics. He was appointed as course director of the Basic Prosthodontics Techniques course in 2002, and has remained director of this course until 2018. Dr. Goktug received his DMD in 2008 from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He was promoted to clinical assistant professor in 2006, in 2010, he was promoted to assistant professor and in 2021 he was promoted to Clinical associate professor. He received multiple awards for teaching. Dr. Goktug has been actively teaching continuing dental education courses for 19 years. He has been practicing dentistry, limited to prosthodontics and teaches postdoctoral prosthodontics at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He has published in peer-reviewed professional dental journals.

Through case studies and real-life examples, attendees will explore the nuances of occlusion management in these diverse clinical situations, gaining insights into achieving optimal occlusal harmony and stability. Special emphasis will be placed on occlusion management in cantilevered restorations, addressing challenges such as load distribution and biomechanical considerations. Participants will learn practical strategies for mitigating risks associated with cantilevers and optimizing occlusal balance for long-term implant success.

  • Clarify the fundamental concepts of functional occlusion and understand how these principles apply to implant dentistry.

Biography: Dr. Ajay Dhingra is a Board Certified Clinical Professor and Director of the Faculty Practice at UConn School of Dental Medicine. He graduated from Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine with a certificate in prosthodontics and a MD in Oral Biology. He is the current President of the Hartford Dental Society and Vice President of the ACP-CT Section. He holds leadership positions at the Connecticut State Dental Association and serves on various committees of the ACP and ACPEF.

Combined Orthognathic Surgery and Full-Arch Dental Implant Reconstruction

This session will provide comprehensive surgical and prosthodontic evaluation of the full-arch dental immediate-load implant patient who has a simultaneous dentofacial deformity and malocclusion. After identifying the patient characteristics that benefit from this combined approach, digital vs analog prosthodontic work-up and virtual surgical planning for the orthognathic surgical work-up and treatment planning will be detailed. Following the planning phase, the surgical phase, and how a combined approach differs from an isolated orthognathic surgery or isolated full-arch case will be reviewed. Post-operative pearls and complications will be discussed as well.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Identify patients who can benefit from combined orthognathic surgery and full-arch dental implant reconstruction of the jaws.
  • Explain how intraoperatively simultaneous orthognathic surgery and full-arch implant reconstruction differs from isolated orthognathic surgery or isolated full-arch implant therapy.
  • Discuss technological advances to digitally plan the prosthodontic, implant, and orthognathic surgery. 

Biography: Dr. Hunter Dawson attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry (ULSD) to complete his DMD. He also completed his advanced education program in prosthodontics at ULSD and his Masters of Science in dentistry. He is also a contributor to spear digest for dental implant topics. Dr. Dawson lectures internationally on comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning, digital implant workflows, advances in digital dentistry, and full-arch reconstruction. He enjoys leading comprehensive treatment planning workshops helping clinicians utilize the latest digital technology workflows.

Biography: Dr. Peter Franco received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Following dental school, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center. Dr. Franco then completed fellowship training at Carolinas Center for Oral and Facial Surgery focusing on complex orthognathic and facial reconstructive surgery. Dr. Franco now practices the full scope of the OMS specialty with Carolinas Center for Oral and Facial Surgery in Charlotte, NC. Board certified by the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He has co-authored multiple journal articles, book chapters, and lectured nationally covering dentofacial deformities, virtual surgical planning, custom fixation, and maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction.

Considerations for Implant Overdentures

Implant overdentures provide patients with a relatively cost-effective means of restoring the edentulous arch and improving oral health related quality of life. Various stud attachment systems have been developed for these prostheses. The key to a predictable restorative outcome is planning ahead for the desired abutment and attachment before dental implants are placed.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • ​Distinguish various attachment systems used for implant overdentures.
  • Realize the importance of prosthetically driven implant and abutment planning for overdenture therapy.
  • Understand the impact of implant divergence and restorative space requirements for implant overdentures. 

Biography: Dr. Angela (Angi) Gullard is a full time faculty member in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in 2016, completing the DMD and PhD program in molecular and cellular pathology. She pursued specialty training at the UTHSC College of Dentistry in Memphis and earned a certificate in prosthodontics and a Master of Dental Science degree in 2019. Since then, she has been serving as the Director of Implant Prosthodontics and Head of Prosthodontics Research at UTHSC, which allows her to regularly engage with predoctoral and postgraduate trainees. She is passionate about prosthodontics, particularly understanding how to best utilize dental materials and having an active role in dental education and research.

Zygomatic Implant-Based Oral Reconstruction and Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Maxillary Defects

Zygomatic implants were originally developed to specifically assist in the prosthetic capabilities for dental oncology patients with maxillary defects. Since its introduction, advancements in reconstructive techniques have led to improved survivorship of patients with maxillary defects. And similarly, have expanded the utility of the zygomatic implant in supporting prosthetic rehabilitation. This presentation will go in depth on zygomatic implant treatment modalities for today’s patient with maxillary defects.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Learn zygomatic treatment algorithms for patients with a maxillary defect.
  • Understand indications and contraindications of zygomatic implants in patients with a maxillary defect.
  • Review long-term outcomes and maintenance related to the reconstructed maxilla rehabilitated with zygomatic implants.

Biography: Dr. Sarah Kay Youny Lee is a maxillofacial prosthodontist who is board-certified in prosthodontics at the Mayo Clinic in the division of prosthetic dentistry and esthetics in the Department of Dental Specialties. She also serves as department’s vice chair of education and associate program director of the maxillofacial prosthetics and dental oncology fellowship. Dr. Lee completed her formal dental training at the Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina. She also completed a general practice residency at the University of Michigan and practiced in public health dentistry. She then completed her advanced prosthodontics training and earned a master’s degree in Oral Biology from UNC. Her maxillofacial prosthetics and dental oncology fellowship was completed at Mayo Clinic. Her specialty interest involves oral reconstruction with prosthetic rehabilitation and digital dentistry.

Prosthetic Implant Complications: Causes, Prevention, and Management

This presentation will address the most common prosthetic implant complications in partially edentulous treatments including loose/stripped/broken screws, progression of open contacts and short anterior crowns, “screwmentable” complications, cement induced peri-implantitis, and more. Each complication topic will cover frequency of occurrence, common causes, strategies for prevention, and management.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the causes of the most common prosthetic implant complications.
  • Follow protocols and techniques to reduce the incidence of prosthetic implant complications.
  • Use practical management and increase prevention of these complications.

Biography: Dr. Todd Schoenbaum is a professor at the Dental College of Georgia where he trains residents and students in implant restorations. He also serves as the Director of Clinical Research for the college. He has published over 60 papers, 10 chapters, and two textbooks. He has a master’s in clinical research from the UCLA School of Medicine, and is a Fellow and Diplomate of the Academy of Osseointegration. Dr. Schoenbaum has been invited to present his clinical and scientific work at conferences worldwide. His clinical practice is limited to fixed implant restorations.
