Digital Workflow for Double Complete Arch Zirconia Prostheses Utilizing a Novel Scan Body

JOP_9-22

Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, a new clinical report from ACP members Aristotelis Marinis, Foteini Touloumi, Konstantinos Chochlidakis, and Hans Peter Weber.

During fixed implant rehabilitation and prior to fabrication of the prosthesis prototype, complete-arch impressions with the double digital scanning (DDS) technique are necessary, however, the superimposition of multiple intraoral STL files is a major challenge.

In the workflow described, an intraoral scanner was used to capture the implants’ position at the abutment level and the patient's existing interim prostheses with the DDS technique. A novel scan body and impression pin were utilized throughout the scanning process which allowed for the accurate and reproducible superimposition of the generated STL files.

The head of the impression pin is used as a stable landmark for the superimposition of multiple STL files, without the need for any type of fiducial markers. This may simplify the process and allow for an efficient and consistent complete digital workflow.

This technique overcomes the limitation of attaching fiducial markers on soft tissues during DDS and can be used in both maxillary and mandibular arches with success irrespective of timing of implant placement.
