Digitally Designed and Manufactured Sectional Custom Tray for a Patient with Microstomia

This report describes a partial digital workflow for the fabrication of a mandibular complete denture for a patient with microstomia. Microstomia is diagnosed as a limited mouth opening that can lead to functional impairments such as difficulty with pronunciation, articulation, deglutition, and ingestion. Microstomia can be congenital, developmental, or acquired.
Dental treatment and management of these patients can be extremely difficult. For this technique, a sectional custom tray was digitally designed and fabricated for a patient with severe microstomia utilizing a preliminary intraoral scan of the edentulous mandibular arch. A final impression was completed with a sectional tray that allowed insertion and removal in two halves, with ease of connection intraorally and extraorally. The impression was cast in type III stone and an injection molding technique was utilized to fabricate a thermoplastic flexible complete mandibular denture.
This technique offers a straightforward and inexpensive approach for treatment and resulted in a successful prosthetic outcome and high patient satisfaction.
