Setting the Sagittal Condylar Inclination on a Virtual Articulator
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Drs. Seoung‐Jin Hong, Youngha Choi, Minseo Park, Janghyun Paek, Ahran Pae, Hyeong‐Seob Kim, Kung‐Rock Kwon, and Kwantae Noh describe a technique using a virtual articulator to obtain the sagittal condylar inclination (SCI) of the protrusive interocclusal position.
A virtual articulator is an instrument to reproduce the position of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches, and to simulate the movement of jaw. As the authors note, an analysis of occlusion is an important step in prosthodontic treatment.
Other current methods that record dynamic mandibular movements are more complex, and it is difficult to precisely apply to a virtual articulator in dental CAD software.
In contrast, this technique is a relatively simple clinical procedure to obtain the individual SCI and can assist in fabricating a prosthesis to minimize the occurrence of occlusal interferences, especially in extensive reconstruction.
