Technique to Fabricate Custom Nasal Pillows and MAD Using A Digital Workflow for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Now online in the Journal of Prosthodontics, Drs. Paul T. Lee and Ryan R. Sheridan describe a digital workflow to fabricate custom nasal pillows and monoblock mandibular advancement device for use in treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Combination therapy for OSA using continuous positive airway pressure and oral appliance therapy is an effective non-surgical treatment, but the laboratory expense and additional chairside time prevent it from being a preferred option.
With this technique, clinicians can provide patients with custom-made nasal pillows that minimize air leakage and offer superior comfort and fit. The proposed method utilizes existing pathways, facilitated by two patient appointments for impression and appliance insertion. It replaces stone casts with digital impression, eliminates extra hardware, minimizes laboratory and chairside time, and produces a predictable and repeatable final product.
